Mobile app economics: Can subscribers exploit carrier cost structures?

Short answer: I don't see how. This question was raised when a startup engaged me to design and develop a mobile app that uses SMS text message transmission system. This article in today's New York Times spells out the U.S. carriers' SMS cost structures. At first glance, at least, I see know way for a subscriber to put cost pressure on their carrier.

Less information can be more informative. Fewer choices can yield satisfying results with less mental "friction". More to look at can lead to seeing less.
